Are you moving or ready for a complete makeover? That's great! It's important to decide beforehand what style you want to create. You'll see that this ensures a beautiful unity in your space and, most importantly, peace of mind during the renovation 🙏🏻.
STEP 1: CREATE A MOOD BOARD
Of course, you'd prefer to start buying things right away! Shopping is one of the most enjoyable activities, but start at the beginning. What style do you want to create in your home? Many people find this a difficult question to answer. Creating a mood board is a perfect way to help with this. You can, of course, do this with Pinterest or Instagram, but personally, we are most fond of old-fashioned cutting and pasting. Buy a few magazines and cut out everything you like. Create a mood board and see how it all looks together. What things do you generally see recurring? Modern? Wooden floor? Or a cast floor? Black kitchen? Steel doors? You will see that your personal style automatically emerges.
TIP: Creating a mood board is also great fun to do with your boyfriend/girlfriend. If each of you creates your own mood board, you can clearly see what things you both like and what things you dislike. This way, you create a shared style and, most importantly... this saves a lot of arguments (phew.. ;))
STEP 2: CHOOSE YOUR BASE
The base determines the entire atmosphere of your space. So don't underestimate this. With only furniture, it's much harder to do a makeover. Therefore, start by choosing your flooring and the colors on the wall. Go and get some color samples from the hardware store and stick your favorites on your mood board. Don't forget your flooring. For example, do you have a wooden kitchen? Then a cast floor would be very beautiful.
STEP 3: CREATE A FLOOR PLAN
Your mood board is done, YES! Well done! Then comes the next (very important) step: drawing out your room. Create a floor plan and, with the mood board next to it, decide where your furniture will go, the colors on the wall, and what kind of floor it will be. This way, you can already give shape to your space, and it will immediately become clear what furniture, lighting, wall decorations, and home accessories you can start shopping for to complete your space!
TIP: When creating your floor plan, don't forget to make a lighting plan. This can greatly determine the atmosphere. Choose dimmers, mood lighting with low wattage, and see if a lamp can stand or hang in every corner. This makes your space optically larger.
